Fashion Illustration vs. Caricatures: What’s the Difference at Live Events?
When planning live entertainment or guest favors at weddings or upscale events, it’s easy to confuse fashion illustration with caricature art—but they’re actually very different experiences. While both involve drawing your guests live, the style, tone, and end result can vary a lot depending on which you choose.
In this post, I’m breaking down the difference between fashion illustrations and caricatures, and sharing why I lean into one over the other when painting live at weddings and events.

About the Artist
Hi friend, I’m Danison—the artist behind Bowtie & Brush. I specialize in live watercolor guest portraits drawn in a fashion illustration style. I’m a proud gay Filipino-American dad, calligraphy lover, and total outfit enthusiast. Whether I’m painting at weddings or sketching guests at a gala, I want everyone who walks away with a portrait to feel confident, stylish, and seen.

The Key Difference: Fun vs. Fashion
Caricatures are great for fun, lighthearted moments. They're usually cartoon-style and known for exaggerating facial features or expressions. Sometimes they make noses big, smiles extra wide, or eyes a little goofy—on purpose! It’s meant to be silly, and for the right setting, it’s a hit.
Fashion illustration, though, comes from the design world. It’s all about highlighting outfits, silhouettes, and style. You’ll see longer, leaner proportions and the focus is more on what people are wearing—not poking fun at how they look. It’s elevated, stylish, and elegant.
That’s why I bring fashion illustration to weddings, corporate events, and formal galas—it aligns with the vibe. Guests are dressed up. They’re feeling good. And the portrait becomes something they’re excited to frame, not just giggle at.

Why I Paint in Fashion Proportions
My portraits are inspired by classic fashion sketches—think runway, with tall and stylized figures. Why? Because the proportions help highlight your outfit. Longer lines = more room for dresses, suits, accessories, and details. It’s about celebrating what makes people feel stylish and so damn good.
I often get guests who jokingly say, “Make me skinnier! Make me taller!” And honestly? They already look great. They’re dressed up and out having a good time. I’m not changing anyone—I’m just capturing that stylish, confident version of them in a chic, hand-painted way.
Also: I personally don’t add facial features. My style keeps it minimal and classy, which makes the final piece more universal and less "portrait-specific." Other artists may include faces or more detail (which can look amazing too!)—but that also takes more time. My simpler style allows me to paint more guests within the limited hours of an event while still keeping it elegant and meaningful.
Guests Deserve to Feel Beautiful
My mission is simple: make people feel good about themselves. I want every person who receives a portrait to feel flattered, appreciated, and celebrated. Whether they frame it, hang it on their fridge, or show it off on Instagram, it should feel like a treat.
Caricatures can be hilarious, and they definitely have their place (especially if your event is casual or you’re leaning into a playful theme). But if you're looking for something more refined, timeless, and art-forward, fashion illustrations bring that elevated feel.
