After spending over 1.5 years trying to figure out the business side of wedding calligraphy, Monstera Gold’s Pro Wedding Calligrapher Course was the game changer I needed to turn my barely there side-hustle into a successful business, all while balancing my 9-to-5 corporate job and family life. And even better—since the time I’ve taken the course, she now has a FREE Masterclass that teaches you 3 Steps to Booking Your Dream Wedding Clients!

Now being in my business for about two years, I’m incredibly proud of how far Bowtie & Brush has come. In my second year, I’ve earned upwards of $75K in revenue and booked over 100 weddings and events! I’ve worked hard to get to a place where I feel comfortable with my pricing, marketing, and overall brand, and it’s paying off in ways I never imagined. I’m now able to confidently offer my calligraphy and artistic services while finding some sort of balance in life, all while making meaningful connections with couples who trust me to add a personal touch to their big day. It’s been an amazing journey, and I’m excited for what’s ahead! And I want that for YOU!

My Calligraphy Business Journey Pre-Course

Bowtie & Brush started with my own wedding. I designed all the signs and stationery, and after the wedding, people kept asking to borrow them! That’s when I thought, “Maybe I could turn this into a business.” My wedding vendors also encouraged me to join the industry, and that’s how Bowtie & Brush was born.

At first, I just made signs and stationery, but I wanted to be more involved on the wedding day, not just drop off and pick up rentals. I love watercolor, calligraphy, and meeting people, so I decided to offer live watercolor guest portraits and live calligraphy and engraving. Now, I get to be part of the wedding day in a special way! Before that, I was selling a few items on Etsy and doing custom commissions like pet portraits and house portraits, but it didn’t feel like the right fit for the long-term vision I had. I had dabbled in teaching lettering and taking on freelance projects, but I still hadn’t found the thing that truly clicked for me and my lifestyle.

Before I found Monstera Gold’s Pro Wedding Calligrapher Course, I was stuck in a phase of trial and error, constantly experimenting with different approaches to find what worked for me. While I was confident in my skills and loved what I did, my business wasn’t growing the way I had hoped. No matter how much effort I put in, the progress was slow, and I knew I needed a change. Cue Shaochen’s course! I basically found gold—pun intended—and it just felt like the right move to level-up my business. But like I said, before the course, this was basically where I was in my business:

  • Trial and error phase: Spending all my time and money testing methods and finding what worked, but still felt stuck. And I basically was using all my clients as ‘first time’ projects that never led me to feeling confident of the final product. It looked great, and they were always happy, but I wasn’t feeling it.

  • Struggling with growth: Earning only $1K in annual revenue despite my passion and skills. I WAS NOT PRICING MYSELF WELL, even as a beginner. And funny enough, I wasn’t truly even a beginner. I was doing calligraphy and watercolor well before the launch of my business, but I didn’t have direction on how to even decide on my hourly rate!

How the Pro Wedding Calligrapher Course Transformed My Business

Monstera Gold’s Pro Wedding Calligrapher Course didn’t just give me confidence—it laid out a clear roadmap to help me launch my business in a way that aligned with my personal goals—make a legit business. 🤣 The course breaks down each step of building a successful wedding calligraphy business, from setting up your services to refining your pricing strategy, all while keeping your unique vision in mind. What I loved most was how she provided all the tools and support needed at every stage, whether it was guidance on marketing, improving profits, or managing client relationships. Of course, I had to still put work, time, and effort in, but with the structure and resources the course offers, I was able to stay on track and build the business I had always dreamed of. It’s kind of like how writing is WAY easier when you write an outline first. In this case, Shaochen did the outline for me. Here's how the course truly transformed my journey:

  • Fast business launch: The course gave me a clear, step-by-step plan that made launching my business happen way faster that I could even imagine. I had been stuck for so long trying to figure out the right strategies on my own, but the course broke everything down into manageable steps, from setting up my services to pricing confidently and getting my name out there. Within just two months, I had my business fully launched—website up, social media active, and clients already booking. The best part was that everything was aligned with my personal goals, which made the process feel not only fast but sustainable for the long term.

  • Revenue boost: Before the course, my revenue was barely making a dent. I was earning about $1K from random commissions and small sales, but I wasn’t seeing the growth I wanted. Once I completed the course, everything changed. I learned how to set my pricing right, how to attract the right clients, and how to run my business efficiently. The result? My earnings skyrocketed to $25K in what felt like no time—and now we’re upwards of $75K! I also learned how to improve my profit margins and conversion rates, meaning not only was I making more money, but I was keeping more of it, too!

  • Winning awards: One of the most exciting moments for me was winning Orlando Magazine’s Annual Best of Wedding Awards in 2024 as the Best Stationery Designer of Company and winning a spot on the Loverly List 2024-2025 as the Best Up-and-Coming Wedding Stationery and Decor. I honestly credit this to the skills, knowledge, and confidence I gained from Shaochen’s course. It helped me create a brand and client experience that stood out in the wedding industry. From marketing to client relationships, I learned how to deliver top-tier service, which led to this incredible recognition. This course taught me how to position my business as one of the best, and that’s been a huge game-changer for me.

My Favorite Tools & Resources from the Course

One of the most valuable parts of Monstera Gold’s Pro Wedding Calligrapher Course was the set of practical tools and resources that helped me build a solid foundation for my business. These tools weren’t just theoretical—they were actionable, and I was able to apply them immediately to grow and manage my business more efficiently.

  • Income planning worksheet: Before the course, I didn’t have a clear understanding of how to set realistic financial goals or how to build services that aligned with those goals. With this worksheet, I was able to set my monthly income targets and work backward to figure out how many services I’d need to offer to meet those goals. It helped me estimate my expenses, like supplies and other business costs, so I could plan accordingly. Plus, the worksheet guided me in determining my hourly rate, which is something I struggled with before. Instead of guessing or undercharging, I could confidently price my services based on my value, time, and the income I wanted to achieve.

  • Supplier shortcuts: One of the trickiest parts of starting a calligraphy business is figuring out what supplies work best, which suppliers are reliable, and where to get everything without spending hours researching. Shaochen shared her go-to supplies and suppliers, which saved me a ton of time and energy. Instead of going through trial and error or searching endlessly online, I had a list of trusted resources right at my fingertips. This made it easy to get the right materials, like high-quality paper, pens, and inks, all while sticking to my budget. Knowing where to source supplies also gave me more time to focus on growing my business, rather than worrying about running out of the right tools.

  • The community: One of the best surprises of the course was the Facebook group filled with fellow calligraphers. Having a community of people who are on the same journey as me has been a game-changer. This group became my go-to place for support, advice, and questions. Whenever I hit a roadblock or needed feedback, there was always someone ready to help out or share their experience. It’s also a space where people share leads and referrals, which has been amazing for growing my network and getting new clients. It’s not just about learning from the course—it’s about having a community that lifts you up and helps you grow. #communityovercompetition
